2023 Walker Cup: Meet the Great Britain and Ireland team

With the United States finalizing their team directly after the U.S. Amateur Championship, Great Britain and Ireland were not far behind as their team is final now, too.

John Gough and Barclay Brown were automatically selected to the team based on their World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) on August 16. Gough was ranked 11th, and Barclay Brown was ranked 25th to earn them their spots.

Let's meet the full roster that GB&I will be sending out against the United States in the 100th Walker Cup at the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland, from Sep. 2-3.

James Ashfield
James Ashfield of Wales has had a great 2023 campaign, finishing T2 for the Lytham Trophy and the European Amateur. He also finished T3 at the European Nations Cup and made the matchplay at the British Amateur.

Jack Bigham of England finished T12 at the St. Andrews Links Trophy and T4 at the European Amateur.

Barclay Brown
Barclay Brown of England has been a collegiate standout at Stanford and qualified for the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club. He also finished T4 for the Cardinals at the NCAA Championships. Brown played in the 2021 Walker Cup.

John Gough
John Gough of England is one of the top-ranked amateurs in the world. He finished runner-up at the European Nations Cup and the Avondale Amateur Medal and won the Irish Amateur Open. He finished in the final 32 at the British Amateur. Gough's brother, Conor, played in the 2019 Walker Cup.

Connor Graham of Scotland won the Scottish Amateur Open Stroke Play and made the quarterfinals at the Scottish Amateur. Graham will be the youngest player to have ever played for either side at 16 years, 10 months, and nine days old.

Alex Maguire
Alex Maguire of Ireland won the East of Ireland Amateur and the St. Andrews Links Trophy. He finished fourth at the Irish Amateur Open and made the Quarterfinals of the British Amateur.

Matthew McClean
Matthew McClean of Northern Ireland qualified for the U.S. Open and played in the 2023 Masters Tournament after winning the 2022 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. He made the semifinals of the Western Amateur and finished T6 at the East of Ireland Amateur. He made the matchplay at the U.S. Amateur.
