Behind a second-place finish by senior Lauren Walsh, the Deacs took the team title by seven strokes over second-place LSU, posting a winning score of 11-over 875. Walsh was one of three Wake players to finish inside the top-10 along with Rachel Kuehn (6th) and Mimi Rhodes (t-7th).
LSU senior and longtime AmateurGolf.com member Latanna Stone picked up the first individual collegiate title of her career, carding rounds of 72-68-70 to finish at 6-under 210, which was good for a five-stroke victory over Walsh.
Stone and Walsh were the only two players in the field who managed to break par at Albany Golf Club, where the PGA Hero World Championship is contested each December.
“I am very happy for Latanna and her first career college individual title,” said LSU head coach Garrett Runion. “She played extremely well on a course the ladies said was one of the toughest, if not the toughest, they played in college golf with the wind condition. To finally get that monkey off her back and post a win was special. I know she was happy and her teammates were genuinely happy as well. Hopefully, she can continue that trend as well as we continue to play the next two weeks.”
Wake Forest will look to defend its title at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate which gets underway on Feb. 27 at Long Cove Country Club in Hilton Head, S.C. The event will be nationally televised by GOLF Channel.
