Jacob Hitt and Clay Guerin come from five shots back for a narrow one-shot win at the Country Club of Columbus

COLUMBUS, GA (April 22, 2018) - Jacob Hitt (Richmond Hill, GA) and Clay Guerin (Hoover, AL) shot the round of the tournament, a 7-under 64, to come from five shots back and win the Haskins Four-Ball at the Country Club of Columbus. It looked like the final round might be a duel between the teams of Matthew Hayes / Garland Ferrell and Rob Cowan / Dave Bunker. Hayes and Ferrell shot 66 each of the first two rounds to reach 10 under par, one shot ahead of the Canadian team of Cowan and Bunker. Hitt and Guerin (a former Alabama Mid-Amateur champion) were at 5 under and five behind, and playing ahead of the leaders, posted 12 under and waited to see if it would hold up. In the end both teams in the final group would fall one shot short. Hayes and Ferrell could only manage a 1-under 70 in the final round, while Cowan and Bunker came in with a 69. The next team in the standings, Greg Brock and Matt Oxford, closed with a 65 to finish fourth at 7-under 206. In the Senior Division, Madden Hatcher and Wright Waddell also closed with a 64, winning by four shots over John Landis / William Cool and Keith Wood / Walker Grant. Hatcher and Waddell had a 14-under 199 total for the tournament. 36-hole leaders Kevin Sullivan and Partick Smithey finished fourth at 9-under 204. In the Super Senior Division, David Dreibelbis and Dick Steed won by four shots over Kevin McDonough and Barry Whatley. The Country Club of Columbus now prepares for its next major event, the Southeastern Amateur, to be played June 13-16.
