2015 NCAA Men's Regionals: Day One Recap

The last step for collegiate teams across the United States before reaching the NCAA National Championship are the six regional tournaments, which began Thursday. The top five teams from each regional will advance to the National Championship in Bradenton, Fla. at The Concession Golf Club — hosted this year by the University of South Florida.

Below are recaps from each of the six regional events, with links (coming soon) to individual stories about each regional site.

EAST REGIONAL - The Course at Yale - New Haven, Conn.

South Florida sophomore Rigel Fernandes posted 64 — four better than anyone on day one at The Course at Yale. He paced the team to one-over 281, which leads Ohio State by a stroke, San Diego State by three, and Vanderbilt by four.

The beginning and end of Fernandes' day were what made his round, as the native of India started with three straight birdies and closed with three more in his final four holes.

Victor Wiggins

SOUTHEAST REGIONAL - Finley Golf Course - Raleigh, N.C.

Three players from UNC Charlotte posted four-under par 68 at UNC Chapel Hill's home course as the surprising 49ers grabbed a six-shot lead over Florida. Victor Wiggins, Raoul Menard, and Seth Gandy led the way for Charlotte, with the sophomore Gandy and senior Menard both posting personal collegiate records.

Florida holds second place over in-state rival Florida State, and Clemson, by three shots with host North Carolina in fifth.

Jeremy Paul

CENTRAL REGIONAL - Sagamore Golf Club - Noblesville, Ind.

Colorado jumped out to an eight-shot lead in Indiana as German twins Jeremy and Yannik Paul posted 68 and 70, respectively, while senior David Oraee also carded 68. Jeremy and Oraee are tied for the individual lead while Yannik is tied for third.

Illinois and Southern Methodist are tied for second place in the team race while UCLA and UNLV are in fourth and fifth place, but 16 and 18 shots back of the leading Buffaloes.

Beau Hossler

SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONAL - The Rawls Course - Lubbock, Texas

Teams are bunched together at the South Central regional as Texas, led by superstar sophomore Beau Hossler, lead the event after day one by a stroke over Houston, while six other teams are within 10 shots. Hossler is tied for second individually with an opening- round 66 to lead the Longhorns, a shot back of leader Austin Eoff of Purdue.

Three other Longhorns golfers shot 69, including freshman Scottie Scheffler, sophomore Gavin Hall, and senior Kramer Hickok.

Paul Dunne

WEST REGIONAL - Olympic Course at Gold Mountain - Bremerton, Wash.

The University of Alabama-Birmingham holds a slim lead over TCU and USC up in Bremerton, Washington. The leading of three UAB players inside the top-10 is senior Paul Dunne, of Ireland, who posted 67 on Thursday to sit one shot back of opening- round leader Sean Crocker — USC's freshman from Zimbabwe.

A group of teams are bunched between fourth and seventh place, with Iowa State and Washington sitting in fourth at 287, South Carolina at 288, and UC Davis at 289.

Grant Hirschman

SOUTHWEST REGIONAL - The Farms Golf Club - Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

Oklahoma will take a five-shot lead into day two at The Farms as freshman Grant Hirschman paced the Sooners with 69 on a rainy day in Southern California. He is tied for first individually with East Tennessee State's Gudmundur Kristjansson and Wichita State's Grant Bennett.

ETSU is tied for second at 289, Wichita State holds third place over St. Mary's by three at 292, while San Diego and Virginia are tied for fifth at 297.
