Murrieta High School's Rickie Fowler won his second CIF Southern Section title, while Clovis West took team honors; amateurgolf.com was there with video coverage
Clovis West High School of Fresno captured the team title, edging out Simi Valley Royal HS. With the best five of six scores counting for the team total, both schools totaled 361 but Clovis West won the title by virtue of a better score by its sixth player. Huntington Beach Edison finished a shot back and will join the other two schools at the CGA-CIF California State High School Championship June 6 at Poppy Hills GC in Pebble Beach.
Fowler -- who shot a 10-under-par 62 at The SCGA Golf Course as a freshman to win this event three years ago -- finished two shots in front of six golfers: Austen Dailey, Edison; Bryan Harris, Palm Desert; Matt Hoffenberg, Royal; Si Hwan Kim, Sunny Hills; Boris Stantchev, Wilson/LB; and Ben Murray, La Quinta.
"This is my home high school course, along with Bear Creek, so it definitely helps, being comfortable having played it and not being so nervous teeing it up," said Fowler. "Basically it's just being comfortable, waking up, sleeping in my own bed."
Although the 18-year-old Fowler, who will attend Oklahoma State University beginning in August, is the defending state champion, he's passing up his title defense to play in the Sunehanna Amateur, a premiere amateur invitational next week in Pennsylvania. "It's one of the biggest amateurs out there," said Fowler after his victory today. "This year's Walker Cup team is what I hope to have a chance at making. It's a possibility if I play well."
He certainly played well today, posting four birdies and an eagle 3 on the 515-yard 17th hole. He is just the second player in 37 years to win this tournament twice (Charley Hoffman in 1994 and 1995) and joins a list of winners that includes Craig Stadler (1971), John Cook (1976), Phil Mickelson (1987) and Tiger Woods (1991 when he was known as "Eldrick").
