ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (October 14, 2016) -- The 2016 St. Augustine Amateur will begin on Friday morning at St. Johns Golf Club with tee times running from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Play for the 84 player event will continue on Saturday before concluding with the final round on Sunday.

Beginning in 2004, this year marks the 13th playing of the event. In 2015 the St. Augustine Amateur, which also includes a Mid-Amateur Division, was won by James Yoon, who finished 6-under.

"We started this event because we wanted to have an event where we could have juniors, (college players), mid-amateurs and in some case seniors in the field and we wanted to be unique by making it walking only," St. Johns Golf Club PGA Professional Wes Tucker said.

Last week the 1986 Bob Walker designed course (par-71; 6,42 yards) was able to survive Hurricane Matthew, "The beaches and the river (nearby) got hit really hard but the golf course is about seven miles inland and we held the rain pretty well because we were below normal rain fall numbers. Then the tree damage was the big thing and we spent Saturday and Sunday cleaning up," Tucker said.

Some players to watch this week include Prescott Butler, 2018 University of North Florida commit Cody Carroll who recently shot a 63 at St. Johns Golf Club, Florida redshirt senior and 2011 champion AJ Crouch, Florida sophomore Blake Dyer, Chris Henderson, Florida State redshirt freshman Jonathan Keppler, 2017 Auburn commit Brandon Mancheno, Florida State freshman Greyson Porter and Jacksonville sophomore Samuel Uhland who led after the first round last year following 6-under 66.

Also included in the field are three players from the North Florida First Tee.

"Part of the tournament as of about six or seven years ago was to make it a fundraiser for the the First Tee of North Florida and we did that going on until last year," explained Tucker. "Then we decided, 'well you know it would be nice to give kids the opportunity to play.' So we let them apply for a spot in the field and then the First Tee of North Florida funds the three players and they come in and play. It gives them experience and it builds some of the life skills and core values that the First Tee is famous for."

Past winners of the St. Augustine Amateur include; Edward Richardson (2014), Andreas Halvorsen (2013), Jack Maguire (2012), AJ Crouch (2011), Chris Bray (2010), Blayne Barber (2009), Zach Suchner (2008), Danny Evelyn (2007), Peter Uihlein (2006), Arnond Vongvanij (2005) and Tyler Brown (2004).
