Kylie Chung added her name to Georgia golf history this week.
The 14-year-old from Cumming, Ga., rallied from four shots behind entering the final round to win the Georgia Women’s Amateur Championship at Athens Country Club, posting rounds of 73-70-67 to finish at 6-under 210.
Chung, who will begin her freshman year at Lambert High School this fall, became the second-youngest winner in tournament history. Only LPGA professional and Stanford graduate Mariah Stackhouse, who won the title as a 14-year-old in 2008, was younger.
Ranked No. 33 in the AJGA Rankings, Chung entered the final round tied for second and trailing defending champion Ava Merrill by four shots. She quickly erased the deficit with a brilliant 5-under 67, the low round of the championship, to pull away for a two-shot victory.
Merrill, a Vanderbilt junior from Johns Creek, Ga., shared runner-up honors at 4-under 212 after rounds of 67-72-73. Joining her was Ole Miss sophomore and Georgia Southern transfer Mary Miller of Savannah, who carded rounds of 70-68-74.
Appalachian State freshman Zoe Duval, also from Cumming, finished fourth at even-par 216 following rounds of 75-72-69.
The victory continues a breakout season for Chung. In five AJGA-ranked events this year, she has already captured the TaylorMade TP5 Junior All-Star and finished runner-up at the prestigious Scott Robertson Memorial. Last week, she also earned her spot in the 77th U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship through the qualifier at Franklin Bridge Golf Club in Franklin, Tenn.
