When I saw the boxes Titleist Pro V1s with double digit numbers behind the counter at El Camino Country Club it got my creative juices flowing, for the first time in years (or ever) when I purchased a dozen balls.
Prior to that, the only decision was whether to purchase “1-2-3-4” or “5-6-7-8” sleeve makeups. I never knew why anyone would want to play a ball with an 8 on it, but maybe that was the idea. Playing a ball that not many people have makes it that much less likely that you will play the wrong ball, which is one of the quickest ways to ruin a round.
El Camino had some great choices – in my case it was easy to decide on 62. That’s the year I was born, and a score that any 3 handicapper would dream of firing. The response I’ve gotten has been amazing. Everyone that sees them asks about them, because the availability of Pro V1 and Pro V1x “play numbers” started as a promotion at the end of March.
“Golfers, whether on the course or through Team Titleist, have often asked us if they can purchase their Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball in their own unique double digit play number,” said Mary Lou Bohn, Vice President Golf Ball Marketing and Communications. “It may be to distinguish their ball from the other three Pro V1 players in their group, they have a lucky number or favorite athlete’s number, or they want to provide a unique gift for a special birthday or anniversary. We want to accommodate those Pro V1 and Pro V1x loyalists who trust the Titleist brand and want to create an even more personal connection.”
Double-digit play numbers can be custom ordered from your Titleist dealer in minimum quantities of six dozen. Or your pro shop, like mine, might order some of the more common numbers, like everyone’s dream round, the 59.
But six dozen balls isn’t really that many, when you think about it. So go ahead and get creative. The ideas are limitless.
