Callaway bridges the gap with new Apex UW

It’s August and Callaway Golf is giving golf consumers the goods. Albeit, the latest club drop might skew toward the better player, it’s still fun to see yet another offering from the OEM. With its new Apex series, Callaway is offering four updated iron models.

And if you’re looking to gap the top of your golf bag, however, you’re in luck.

The brand new Callaway Apex UW (stands utility wood) has arrived and pre-orders are scheduled for August 18th. The previous generation of the UW was met with a huge embrace from tour players, but also from amateur players such as myself. While I’m nowhere near scratch, I instantly connected with the shape of the original Apex UW because it meets smack in the middle of a hybrid and a fairway wood. I’ve found it to be a reliable club to use on the tee box and love how it cuts through the rough.

So when Callaway made the announcement for the new and improved UW, I was as excited as anyone. I also fully intend to get my pre-order in the first day.

“This is geared toward elite players, Tour players, better amateurs, that really fills that gap between a fairway wood and a hybrid,” said Dave Neville, Sr. Director, Brand Management. “We’ve brought our best technologies to this version –the Batwing Technology, an all-new Cutwave Sole Design, and Optimized CG.”

Let’s dissect the technology that Neville mentions in his above comment.

First, Batwing Technology is a structural design that originated with the Rogue line. The A.I. designed structure in the new UW is pushed to the perimeter and when combined with a C300 Face Cup it allows the body to stay stiff while the face does all of the work and flexes. What does that mean for us? Faster ball speeds, more distance, more control. All good things.

Callaway Apex UW Weighting

The Cutwave Pro Sole makes this such a versatile club and really plays to its existence as not a hybrid, not a fairway wood. The sole design improves on what was already a great club to take out of the rough or uneven lies.

The CG position is as neutral as they come. Working in tandem with the rest of the tech, you’ll likely find the Apex UW to have a higher launch with steep landing angles which is ideal if you’re using it from the fairway and need the ball to perform closer to an iron once it hits the green.

VP of Callaway R&D, Brian Williams, noted that much of the design came from hearing what types of shots touring pros desired to hit with a club of this length.

“It’s a very precise club producing neutral ball flight, players can work it either way that they want, and we’ve really seen Tour players lead the way, and our Staff Pros and Master Staffers start to talk about it,” added Williams.
