U.S. Open, the USGA's Major Golf Championship

Jun 18 – Jun 21, 2026

Follow live →

The U.S. Open is golf's most democratic major — anyone with a low enough handicap index can try to qualify, and a handful of amateurs earn their way into the field every June.

We track the amateurs from local and final qualifying all the way to the championship: who's in the field, how they got there, and how they fare against the world's best.

U.S. Open — frequently asked

Can amateurs play in the U.S. Open?

Yes. The U.S. Open is open to any professional and any amateur with a Handicap Index of 0.4 or lower. Amateurs earn their place through the same local and final qualifying as everyone else.

How do amateurs qualify for the U.S. Open?

Through two stages: 18-hole local qualifying at sites across the country, then 36-hole final qualifying ("Golf's Longest Day"). Top finishers earn exemptions into the championship.

Do amateurs keep their amateur status playing the U.S. Open?

Yes — amateurs retain their status as long as they do not accept prize money. The low amateur in the field is recognized but does not collect the corresponding professional purse.
