Top seed falls, Met Am quarterfinals suspended for weather

Play was called for weather on Friday, but not before top seed Chris Gotterup fell in the first round of match play

PARAMUS, N.J. (Aug. 3, 2018) – Play in the 116th Met Amateur Championship at Arcola Country Club was suspended for the remainder of the day at 3:05 p.m., due to heavy rains. Play in the quarterfinal round will resume on Saturday at noon. Play was first suspended at 2:25 p.m., while steady, heavy rains forced play to be suspended for the day.

At the time of suspension, Ryan Davis led Trevor Randolph, 3 up through 10, while Jake Mayer held a 1-up advantage over Brad Tilley through 9.

Dawson Jones and Christian Cavaliere stood all square through seven, and reigning Met Amateur champion Matt Mattare led reigning MGA Player of the Year James Nicholas, 1 up through 7.

The day began with a 4-for-3 playoff in which Tilley, Mattare and Louis Amira secured the final positions in the bracket.

In the morning round of 16, Cavaliere outlasted Ethan Wall in 21 holes, making birdie on the par-4 third to advance. Jones also took care of business in extra holes, as a par 3 on the second closed out his match in 20 holes against Thomas LaMorte.

Mayer edged Andrew Biggadike, 2 and 1, while Tilley defeated recent Carter Cup champion Carter Prince, 3 and 2.

Davis recorded the largest margin of victory, defeating Gerry Mackedon of Port Jefferson, 7 and 6. Randolph also closed out his match early on, besting Amira, 5 and 5.

After snagging the final seed in match play, Mattare defeated stroke play medalist Chris Gotterup, 3 and 2. Nicholas won by the same margin over Ethan Ng.
