Top-ranked Vanderbilt out fast at Mason Rudolph Championship

Commodores hold a six-shot lead over Tennessee and Mississippi State heading into Tuesday's second round

Top-ranked Vanderbilt continues to get its reps in ahead of a month-long postseason which begins next week at the Southeastern Conference Championships.

Getting a taste of some home cooking, the Commodores jumped out to a commanding lead after the first round of the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. At 10-under 274, the Dores enjoy a six-shot lead over Mississippi State and Tennessee heading into Tuesday's second round.

Fresh off his Masters appearance, sophomore Gordon Sargent crafted an opening-round 66 and at 5-under, has a one-stroke lead over his Vandy teammate Cole Sherwood, while Elite Amateur Cup winner Caleb Surratt of Tennessee is one of five players two back at 3-under par.

Vanderbilt's Reid Davenport, competing as an individual, carded a 68 and is tied for third overall while Matthew Riedel was 2-under-par and is tied for eighth.

“I thought we did a lot of good things out there today. I’m especially excited about how we finished the round really strong,” Vandy head coach Scott Limbaugh said. “It was good seeing Cole get off to a good start early and play a very good round."

The Commodores are scheduled to tee off at 12:02 p.m. Tuesday alongside Mississippi State and Tennessee.
