Scott Harvey fires 64 to lead Porter Cup on day one

2014 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Scott Harvey had an eagle-birdie finish at Niagara Falls Country Club to lead by one in New York

LEWISTON, N.Y. — Scott Harvey finished his opening round of the 2015 Porter Cup with a bang. He holed out for eagle at the 460-yard, par-4 17th, and followed it up with a birdie on 18 to post 64 and lead by a stroke at Niagara Falls Country Club. Harvey is looking for his third victory of the calendar year, having already captured the South American Amateur in Peru, as well as the Gasparilla Invitational — a mid-amateur tournament in Florida. He put himself on the map last September with a victory over Brad Nurski at the U.S. Mid-Amateur. Trailing close behind Harvey are former Virginia Tech golfer Trevor Cone, who tied for first at his final ACC Championship this spring, and Texas Longhorn junior, and New York native Gavin Hall. Cone's round featured two eagles, one on each side, while Hall made no bogeys to go along with five birdies. Tied for fourth place with four-under 66s are University of Houston senior Blair Hamilton, Dalton State junior Sean Elliott, and Texas high-schooler David Snyder. Hamilton, of Canada, is fresh off a PGA Tour appearance at the RBC Canadian Open, where he was one of five amateurs in the field. Thirty-five players are even-par or better after day one, with 21 players sitting within four shots of Harvey's lead.
