Schmus goes low to win Wisconsin Mid-Amateur title

Ryan Schmus was the only player to break par in the final round of the Wisconsin Mid-Am, and it earned him the title

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (Sept. 11, 2018) – A 2-under 69 was exactly what Ryan Schmus needed Tuesday in the final round of the Wisconsin Mid-Amateur Championship. Schmus, a Brookfield, Wisc., resident, used a final-round score in the red to take the Mid-Amateur title by two shots.

Schmus, as it turns out, was the only golfer to go under par in the final round at Pine Hills Country Club. His day began with a double bogey on No. 2, but he rebounded with two birdies – which sandwiched a bogey – to finish the front nine. Schmus had three birdies for a back-nine 33 that effectively sealed the title. Schmus had started the day tied for third, six shots off the pace.

Chad Isken, a Sheboygan local, and Jim Doing, the first-round leader from Verona, tied for second at 2 over. Doing had a rough day with seven bogeys – including two on the closing holes – and only one birdie in a 6-over 77.

Joe Weber, last year’s champion, was fourth at 5 over after rounds of 74-73.
