San Francisco City Announces New Website, Online Registration Begins

AmateurGolf.com helps the country's oldest continuously-held match play tournament move into its second 100 years

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.  (December 3, 2016) -- Today marks the launch of a new, responsive website for the one of the most historic golf tournaments in the United States. The 101st annual San Francisco City Championship, as part of a sponsor-supported effort to take the match play event to the next level for the next 100 years, has not only unveiled a new website, it has made commitments to a sweeping list improvements.

Over the years the goal of the committee has been to continue to improve the tournament. Player experience in the City Championship is always the focal point. To keep costs low, most match play rounds were played at Lincoln Park.

“For the 101st playing of The City we have been able to move the tournament back to TPC Harding Park, the tournament’s historic home course,” said Tournament Chairman Michael Miller. “This was made possible with the help of San Francisco Parks and Rec, TPC Harding Park GM Tom Smith, and the generous financial support of title sponsor Charles Schwab.”

The tournament has also received support from The Mayor's Cup, Carol Kaufman, and a diverse group of local businesses that include taverns, a car dealership, and a major golf publication, Global Golf Post. The sponsor list is as almost as diverse as the cast of characters who play each year – the tournament has always been famous as a place where a firefighter, a plumber, or a company CEO might face off on any given day, on an equal playing field.

With only a minimal entry fee increase, the need to charge additional green for match play has been eliminated. This is sure to be popular with players, especially those that advance well through their brackets. The tournament will also go off in threesomes at 11-minute intervals in qualifying to improve pace of play and the overall feel of the tournament.

“The City” was founded in 1917 and has been played every year since, uninterrupted by rain, sleet, wind or war.  We are extremely happy to be involved in starting the tournament's second hundred years on a positive note as this historic tournament continues to provide enjoyment for generations of California golfers.
