Preston Summerhays and Arizona State lead the ASU Thunderbird

Summerhays leads by three shots, while Arizona State leads by 13 shots in both of their title defenses

After 36 holes, the 2024 Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz., is a deja vu for the participants.

Arizona State and Preston Summerhays both hold commanding leads with 18 holes remaining.

Arizona State shot rounds of 10-under 274 in the first round and 13-under 271 in the second round to pull away from the field.

Arizona is in solo second place at 10-under, and Houston and UCLA are T3 at 6-under. Oregon State is in solo fifth place at 5-under, and Oklahoma is in solo sixth place at 2-under. Texas Tech, Utah, and Oklahoma State are T7 at 1-under. 

Preston Summerhays is 18 holes away from winning the invitational for the second straight season. He is 9-under and three shots better than the field after rounds of 4-under 67 in the first round and 5-under 66 in the second round. 

Summerhays is ranked No. 13 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings and was a member of the winning 2023 Walker Cup team.

Summerhays Arizona State teammates Wenyi Ding and Michael Mjaaseth are T2 a6 -under, along with Tony Xiong of Arizona. Some of the golfers with later tee times were unable to finish their second round, as Mjaaeseth is through 14 holes.

Ryggs Johnston of Arizona State and Pablo Ereno of UCLA are T5 at 5-under and four shots back of Summerhays. Four golfers are T7 at 4-under.
