Poirier wins again at Vermont Mid-Amateur

WARREN, Vt. (Aug. 20, 2018) – With a birdie on the first playoff hole, Garren Poirier became the Vermont Mid-Amateur champion. Poirier led for much of his final match against Bryan Smith before he lost his advantage with a bogey at the last and the match went to a playoff.

Poirier had three birdies in the final match at Sugarbush Golf Course. A birdie at the first had Smith playing catch-up for most of the day. This scenario has played out before. Poirier also won this championship in 2016, and he met Smith in the final match that year, too. In addition to 2016, Poirier also won this title in 2012 and 2015.

Poirier never really had a runaway match in his path to the championship. He defeated Eric Lajeunesse, 2 and 1, in the semifinals and Troy Goliber, 3 and 2, in the quarterfinals. Poirier had the No. 3 seed on the bracket.

A resident of Killington, Vt., Poirier played college golf for Temple University. He is a wedding photographer, and has appeared in a handful of USGA events, including the 2014 and 2016 U.S. Mid-Amateurs.
