First played in 1929, the Pasadena City Championship drew over 600 participants during its peak years (1975-90), earning it the distinction of being one of the largest city championships in the country. However, the tournament dwindled to less than 200 participants in 2018 and was canceled altogether in 2019 due to a lack of participation.
The 87th playing of the Pasadena City Championship gets tees off on Friday at the historic William P. Bell-designed Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena. A 54-hole medal play event with a 36-hole cut after two days, the Pasadena City historically attracts some of the elite high school and collegiate golfers from Southern California, along with some mid-amateurs and seniors ready to test their games against the Gen Z's.

Venerable Brookside Golf Club, in the shadow of the Rose Bowl, has hosted numerous major golf tournaments, including 11 PGA Tour events (Pasadena Open 1929 –1938 and the Los Angeles Open in 1968). In addition, Brookside hosted the LPGA Tour in 1971, the USGA Public Links Championship in 1974 as well as numerous SCGA amateur events. Brookside is the only golf course in Southern California to have hosted the PGA, LPGA, USGA and SCGA championships.
