NYC media tour highlights Augusta National Women's Amateur

More pieces to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur are coming together daily. On Wednesday, two notable collegians in the field – Sierra Brooks and Maria Fassi – joined Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez on a New York City press tour to talk about the event and unveil the trophy. It’s the kind of publicity usually reserved for a major winner.

One of the announcements Lopez made during a spot on CNBC’s Squawk Box was that she and fellow World Golf Hall of Fame members Annika Sorenstam, Lorena Ochoa and Se Ri Pak would not only attend the event, but take part in a first-tee ceremony at the beginning of the final round – the only round played at Augusta National.

“The women’s game has developed in so many meaningful ways since I began playing, and this championship marks another significant milestone that will help inspire interest and grow the game,” said Lopez. “It’s truly exciting to see these young women take the stage in one of golf’s most iconic settings, and I look forward to supporting the event.”

Brooks and Fassi, meanwhile, had the duty of unveiling the trophy on the NBC Today Show. It’s a piece designed in collaboration with Tiffany & Co., and was made in the style of a bowl with spun sterling silver and 24k yellow golf vermeil. The event’s logo and the namesake flowers of each hole at Augusta National are worked into the design.

After the Today Show appearance, Fassi and Brooks next stopped at the New York Stock Exchange.

“Competing at Augusta National is a dream for every golfer, and I can’t wait for the chance to play in this very first event,” said Brooks. “Being a part of the trophy unveiling in New York City only adds to the excitement for this amazing opportunity.”

The final round of the 54-hole event, the one played at Augusta National Golf Club, will be broadcast live Saturday April 6 on NBC from noon to 3 p.m. It will be a powerful visual of females playing the iconic course.

“Until last year, having the chance to compete at Augusta National so early in my career is something I didn’t know could be possible,” said Fassi. “I feel very fortunate to be participating in such a special championship and seeing the trophy will make it feel even more real.”

Earlier this spring, Brooks appeared on Golf Channel's Morning Drive to talk about the event, and also spoke to AmateurGolf.com.
