Northeast Amateur: Gielow takes lead

With 1 round left, Wake Forest junior Brendan Gielow leads by two at 6-under-par

RUMFORD, R.I. (June 20, 2008) -- The assault on par ended with a thud during the third round of the 47th Northeast Amateur today at Wannamoisett C.C.
With only 11 players shooting under par today, the final round shapes up as very competitive. There are just eight players under par after three rounds with Wake Forest junior Brendan Gielow leading the way with a 6-under total of 201 (68-66-67). Gielow, who hails from Muskegon, Mich., shot a 2-under 67 that included six birdies and a bogey on the 18th hole. He is the only player in the field to shoot under par in all three rounds.
Gielow leads the University of Florida's Will Strickler by two strokes. Strickler also shot a 2-under 67 today. Dan Woltman (Wisconsin) and Nathan Smith (Pittsburgh) are three strokes back at 3-under. Smith led the tournament after both the first and second rounds but fell back after shooting a 3-over 72. Other players still under par include Jon Curran (Hopkington, Mass.) and Kevin Tway (Oklahoma State) at 2-under and Danny Lee (New Zealand) and Rory Hie (U-Southern California) at 1-under par.
Gielow and a few other players have a chance at the Northeast's all-time scoring record of 8-under par. The record is held by PGA Tour stars John Cook (set in 1979) and Luke Donald (2000) and Kyle Reifers (2005).
