PITTSFORD, N.Y. (June 16, 2007)-- Coastal Carolina senior Dustin Johnson entered the day with a six-stroke lead behind his tournament and course record matching low of 62 taming the Monroe Golf Club course on Friday. The 2007 NCAA Division I Ping First-Team All-American played steady golf in the final round posting a 1-over-par 71 to cruise to victory in the 67th Annual Monroe Invitational Championship finishing at 11-under-par 269.
Johnson finished four better than Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech who carded a 5-under-par 65 in the final round securing second at 273, while UNLV’s Jarred Texter and Jon Curran shared third with 4-under-par 276 totals.
Johnson started the day unlike Friday’s round when he tamed the course with his sizzling 62, recording bogeys on Nos. 2 and 3 and went out at 2-over-par 37. Despite his early struggles, Johnson’s lead never dipped below four strokes. After bogeying the 192-yard par-3 13 th, he parred the 14 th, birdied the 371-yard par-4 15 th and then parred out to finish at 1-over-par 71.
“I struggled on the front, but I just stuck to my game plan and didn’t worry about what everyone else was doing,” Johnson said. “This is a great win for me on a good course and against a good field. This gives me a lot of confidence going into next week for the Northeast Am.”
Johnson’s the lowest total since Clemson’s D.J. Trahan (now on the PGA Tour) set the tournament record with a 12-under-par total in 2002. Trahan also posted a 62 that year in the second round of the event.
