Mass. Amateur: Loaded field includes former MLB pitcher

When the 2011 Massachusetts Amateur Championship begins Monday at Wyantenuck Country Club in Great Barrington, former Major League pitcher Mike Trombley will be in the field. Trombley, who played 10 years for the Minnesota Twins, Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers, tees off at 12:50 p.m. Now a member at Country Club of Wilbraham, Trombley is a contributor and host on Springfield's ESPN Radio affiliate, giving him the baseball outlet necessary. He gets his competitive itches out on the golf course. After his baseball career was over, Trombley joined a celebrity golf tour and performed quite well. Since returning to his native Western Massachusetts, Trombley has regained his amateur status and sets his sights on the Massachusetts Amateur Championship. Defending Jim Hadges leads a powerful field of players into the state's amateur championship. Brian Higgins, Jim Kearney, Frank Vana, Jr. and Brad Tufts are just a few big names hoping to win this highly-anticipated event.
