Denny McCarthy leads Porter Cup

McCarthy, a sophomore at Virginia, fired a first-round 6-under 64 at Niagra Falls Country Club

LEWISTON, N.Y. (July 18, 2012) -- Denny McCarthy shook off a bogey on his first hole Wednesday to shoot 6-under 64 at Niagara Falls Country Club for the first-round lead at the 54th Porter Cup. McCarthy, a sophomore at Virginia from Rockville, Md., birdied the three par 5s in an otherwise flawless opening round. He was No. 75 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings last year as a freshman. Tyler Dunlap, a Texas A&M sophomore from Westlake, Texas, and Tyler McCumber, a Florida senior from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., are one shot back after posting bogey-free 65s. Defending champion Patrick Rodgers, a Stanford sophomore from Avon, Ind., is tied for 10th at 67. Thirty-seven of the 78 players broke par.
