The rising senior at the University of Colorado took his exams early so he
could qualify for the State Amateur. McGlasson moves on to the quarterfinals
Friday in the CGA (State) Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach after defeating
Eddie Olson 5 and 4. A terrific approach shot to within five feet on the treacherous
8th hole jumpstarted McGlasson's day. Four holes later, consecutive birdies
ended the match on No. 14.
"This is the perfect course for match play," said McGlasson. "The
course is fair and tests all aspects of your game." Having played Pebble
only a handful of times, McGlasson is relying on his Dad's course knowledge.
His father, a former NFL lineman, has played the famed links more than 20 times
and is carrying the bag and reading greens for his son this week.
Rick Reinsberg of Lafayette is carrying his own bag, but is still making quick work of his match play opponents. The former Cal golfer cruised through his morning match, winning 6 and 5, and several hours later dispatched Doug Miller, 4 and 3. Three birdies in six holes after the turn propelled the NCGA Four-Ball champion (with partner Scott Hardy) to victory this afternoon.
"I hit the ball very well today," said Reinsberg. "I hit a great fairway bunker shot on No. 10 that got me going." Reinsberg's best showing in this event is the round of 16. Despite knowing the course well, he has tremendous amount of respect for the greens and acknowledges, "the putts can get away from you very easily."
Continuing a trend of the medalist bowing out early, Jordan Cox lost on the 16th hole to Eric Riehle. A two-under-par 34 at the turn was offset by a bogey, double bogey, bogey stretch on the back nine. Joseph Bramlett and Chris Heintz each won the 18th hole with respective birdies, while Don Dubois needed a par on the 19th hole to defeat Steve Woods.
Also moving on to the quarterfinals, was John Pate of Santa Barbara and Scott
McGihon of Bermuda Dunes. The quarterfinalists tee off at 6:10 a.m. Friday,
with the semifinals starting at noon. A 36-hole final is scheduled for Saturday
morning. Live scoring will continue to be provided for the remainder of the
matches.
