California State Am: Cox claims Medalist honors

High School Senior Jordan Cox of Redwood City claims qualifying Medalist honors with a 72 at Pebble Beach landing him at 212 while Ed McGlasson of Orange was just 1 stroke higher

PEBBLE BEACH, CA (June 22, 2005) -- Jordan Cox of Redwood City continued his stellar play to earn medalist honors in the final round of stroke-play qualifying at the CGA Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach GL. In his first appearance in the championship, Cox fired an even par-72 to finish at 212, after opening 71-69 in the first two rounds at Poppy Hills GC. The rising senior at Serra High School had played Pebble Beach only one time previously. Without course knowledge, he relied on deft touch around the greens and solid putting to navigate the 6,719-yard-layout. "My goal was to make match play," Cox said. "Once you get in match play everyone has a chance. I feel great now because I am not making too many mistakes and I am getting up and down from everywhere." The field enjoyed sunny skies and calm conditions during the first two rounds, but the third round brought difficult windy conditions. Edward McGlasson of Orange earned the No. 2 seed with a 72 at Pebble for a 213 total, while Joshua Warthen of San Diego finished one stroke back to gain the third seed. Cox headlines a group of young stars who fared well during the qualifying stages. Four seventeen year olds advanced to match play competition. Joseph Bramlett of Saratoga, was one of three players to card the low round of the day, 69. Nine players finished the third round with a 222 total and were forced to come back in the afternoon for a playoff for the remaining seven spots. The playoff is in progress. Players avoiding the playoff and making match play include 1998 Amateur champion Ed Cuff., former NCGA Player of the Year Rick Reinsberg and NCGA Junior champion Roberto Galleti Jr. The 32 qualifiers will return to Pebble Thursday morning for matches starting at 6:10. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be held Friday, while the scheduled 36-hole final match will be completed Saturday.
