SANDWICH, ENGLAND (June 22, 2006) -- Stephen Lewton of Woburn was two under par at Royal St George's as he claimed the scalp of Oliver Fisher, the youngest ever Walker Cup player, in the third round of the Amateur Championship. Fisher was only 16 when he played for Great Britain & Ireland against the United States last year and two weeks ago he won the prestigious St Andrews Links Trophy.
But he was two down with two to play against Lewton when he prolonged the match with a 20-foot birdie putt at the 17th. At the final hole he was safely on the green in two with his opponent left of the green. But Lewton pitched to 10 feet and holed the vital putt to claim a one hole victory.
In the opening match of the third round Llewellyn Matthews, the leading qualifier, dropped the first two holes to Chandler Cocco of the USA but made what he described as "a significant surge" with birdies at the six and seventh and a winning par at the eighth to move into the lead.
Although brought back to square at the 10th, he established a two-hole margin at the 13th and 14th which he maintained to a 2 and 1 win.
"I got a bonus last night with a call from home saying that family, friends and fellow members at Southerndown were coming through to watch me today," he said. "It was important to win and still be here."
