Amazing playoff at Rice Planters

Carter Newman of Augusta State outlasts his opponent in a 5-hole playoff

SNEE FARM, South Carolina (June 26, 2010) -- Augusta State’s Carter Newman fired his second straight, 4-under 68 Saturday and then defeated J. Fernandez Valdes in a five-hole playoff to capture the 38th annual Rice Planters Amateur at Snee Farm Country Club, just outside of Charleston. Newman, who recorded five birdies against just one bogey in his final round, chipped in for birdie on the par-4 18th hole on the fifth hole of his playoff for the victory. Valdes drained a 20-foot par putt on the first extra hole to extend the playoff, only to have Newman hole an eight-footer for par on the second extra hole to extend the playoff. Newman shot under par in all four rounds (71-69-68-68) and posted a 72-hole total of 12-under 276. Georgia Southern’s Logan Blondell and Pete Kellerman tied for third at 11-under 277 and Wes Roach alone in fifth at 10-under 278.
