95th Crump Cup set to tee off at Pine Valley

The 95th edition of the George A. Crump Memorial Tournament tees off this Thursday at Pine Valley

The 95th playing of the George A. Crump Memorial Tournament, better known as the Crump Cup, is set to tee off this Thursday at Pine Valley Golf Club.

The tournament has long been considered the premier mid-amateur and senior golf event on the amateur golf calendar, and some consider it to be the best experience in amateur golf. To find out why, follow the link below.

Format

36 holes of stroke play qualifying determine match play brackets of 16 for the mid-amateurs, and 8 for the seniors. Only those in the Championship bracket are eligible for the overall title.

*Crump Cup Sunday is the one day of the year that the public is invited to Pine Valley, to walk the course and watch the final matches.

Champions

Jay Sigel has won the most Crump Cup titles, winning nine times between 1975 and 1993. Longtime Pine Valley Golf Club President O. Gordon Brewer, Jr. won the tournament five times from 1973 to 1989. More recently, Mike McCoy won four times in a seven-year span from 2004 to 2010.

Past champions include giants of the amateur game, going all the way back to Francis Ouimet and Chick Evans, who each won the event in its first five years of existence.

46-year-old Patrick Duffy of Omaha, Nebraska beat fellow midwesterner (and former U.S. Mid-Amateur runner-up) Brad Nurski in a thrilling 19-hole final.

Duffy took a 2-up lead to the 16th tee but lost two holes coming in before prevailing when Nurski three-putted the extra hole.

In the Senior Division, Gene Elliott (W. Des Moines, Iowa) closed out Jeff Burda (Modesto, Calif.) 5 and 4 to become just the fourth player to win the open division and the senior division in the tournament’s 94-year history.
