The 21-year-old closes with a birdie on the 72nd hole to secure a breakthrough victory at Seapoint
Patrick Keeling held his nerve down the stretch to win the Irish Amateur Open by one shot at Seapoint Golf Links in Termonfeckin, Ireland.
The 21-year-old University of Louisville junior finished at 11-under 277 with rounds of 72-62-73-70, sealing the title with a clutch birdie on the par-5 18th in the final round.
Keeling, who plays out of Roganstown, entered the final round with a one-shot lead but quickly found himself tied with four others around the turn as the leaderboard tightened. He responded with birdies on the 10th and 11th to regain control and added another on the 14th, though a closing 66 from England’s Caolan Rafferty Howard kept the pressure firmly on.
The finish was anything but comfortable. Keeling missed a birdie chance on 16 and dropped a shot on 17, leaving him needing a composed finish at the last. After finding the fairway, his approach carried over the green, but he recovered brilliantly, leaving himself a 12-foot birdie putt that he calmly converted to clinch the championship.
Howard finished runner-up at 10-under (70-69-73-66), while defending champion Stuart Grehan (67-71-74-67) and County Louth’s Gerard Dunne (69-67-73-70) shared third at 9-under.
Earlier in the week, Keeling produced the round of the tournament with a course-record 10-under 62 in his second round.
The victory places Keeling among a notable list of past champions that includes major winners Pádraig Harrington and Louis Oosthuizen.
