lahoma flips a Texas lead with a commanding singles sweep to keep hold of the Red River Cup
Oklahoma delivered a commanding performance in Tuesday’s singles matches to retain the Red River Cup, defeating Texas 48.5–32.5 at Wichita Falls Country Club. The annual matches feature two 18-player teams — eight mid-amateurs, six senior amateurs and four women — selected by the Texas Golf Association and Oklahoma Golf Association.
The 27-match format awards three points per match. Texas held a narrow 14.5–12.5 lead after Monday’s four-ball session, but Oklahoma turned the contest around in singles, claiming 36 of the 54 points to move to 2–0 overall in the series.
Only four Texans took points in their matches: John Pierce, Greg Galasso and Casey Carnes each swept their 18-hole matches, while John Schaefer earned two points. For Oklahoma, the board stayed blue for most of the day, with twelve of eighteen singles matches finishing as outright wins.
Wichita Falls Country Club, located just south of the Oklahoma border, hosted the event for the first time. The par-72 course, redesigned in 2008 by D.A. Weibring and Steve Wolfard, offered a firm test for the second edition of the Cup.
The matches return to Oklahoma in 2026, when The Territory Golf & Country Club in Duncan will host again. Teams will be selected through statewide and senior Player of the Year rankings across men’s and women’s divisions.
This event is invitation only with players earning exemptions through the TGA Player of the Year Standings. All players must have competed in a minimum of two Texas Golf Association Events in the current season
