The U.S. Senior Open will be held from June 26 to June 29 at The Broadmoor (East Course) in Colorado Springs, Colo. Local Qualifying will take place from April 3 to May 9. Final Qualifying will be held from May 19 to June 2.

The U.S. Senior Open, introduced 45 years ago in 1980, is one of the five major championships in senior golf. The PGA Tour Champions and the European Senior Tour recognize it as a major championship.

The lower age limit was 55 in 1980, but it was lowered to 50 for the second edition in 1981, aligning with the standard age limit for men's senior professional golf tournaments. While the event is technically open to amateurs with an index of 2.4 or below, it has been predominantly dominated by professionals.

Each year, double-digit numbers of amateurs advance through the 18-hole qualifying, but there are usually just a couple left standing when the 36-hole cut is made. We recently took a look at the reasons why.

As of 2024, professional players have won all the championships. Following the tradition of other USGA championships, they have been hosted on numerous highly ranked courses across the United States.

Annandale Golf Club, Pasadena, Calif.

Annandale Golf Club tested the players in this one, with three golfers earning co-medalist honors at 2-over and no golfers finishing under par. Two of the co-medalists, Tim Beans and Goran Hagegard, are amateurs. Of the 18 final qualifiers, eight were amateurs. Full Field Results>

Bearpath Golf and Country Club, Eden Prairie, Minn.

After making a bogey on the second hole, amateur Jesse Bull bounced back on the bank nine with a 32 to finish 3-under and in solo second place. Five other amateurs punched a ticket to final qualifying. Full Field Results>

Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club, Fort Carson, Colo.

Ten amateurs advanced to final qualifying from the Colorado site, with Shawn McCaskey earning low amateur honors after finishing T2 at 1-under. To his advantage, he played "boring" golf, recording one birdie and 17 pars. The birdie came on the second hole. Full Field Results>

Muskegon Country Club, Muskegon, Mich.

2021 U.S. Senior Amateur and Michigan Golf Hall-of-famer Jerry Gunthorpe finished as co-medalist with fellow amateur Mike Ignasiak. The duo carded rounds of even par 72, with Gunthorpe recording four birdies and four bogeys and Ignasiak recorded two birdies and two bogeys. Full Field Results>

Sands Point Golf Club, Sand Points, N.Y.

Only professional Mark Brown shot under-par, finishing as the medalist at 1-under. Amateur Michael Stamberger finished as the low amateur at 2-over and in solo second place with four bogeys and two birdies. Stamberger won the 2013 and 2014 New Jersey State Amateur. Serrano Country Club, El Dorado Hills, Calif.

Robert Funk, Ryan Goodwin, and Nick Wood all tied for low amateur honors at T2 and 3-under. Dave Cunningham ran away with medalist honors at 7-under, and an impressive eleven amateurs advanced at Serrano Country Club. Full Field Results>

Vero Beach Country Club, Vero Beach, Fla.

Eight amateurs qualified for final qualifying, while Jack Schlotterback shot a perfect 4-under 68 with four birdies and no bogeys to earn medalist honors by one shot. Schlotterback made national headlines in 2023 when he made two holes-in-one in the same round. Full Field Results>

Worthington Hills Country Club, Worthington, Ohio

2023 Northeast Ohio Senior Amateur champion Kurt Peterson earned low amateur honors at Worthington Hills, shooting a round of even par to finish T4. Of the 15 total qualifiers at this site, only four were amateurs. Full Field Results>

Cleburne Golf Links, Cleburne, Tex.

Amateur Marcus Jones shot a 4-under 68 to earn co-medalist honors with Chris O'Connell. He finished with birdies on holes No. 16 and 18 to cap off his impressive round. Seven amateurs were apart of the 19 qualifying spots. Full Field Results>

Wednesday, April 30

Orchard Ridge Country Club, Fort Wayne, Ind.

2015 Indiana State amateur champion Sean Rowan shot a 3-under 69 to win medalist honors by one shot over Dave Pugh. Rowan carded six birdies, a bogey and a double bogey on the par-4 No. 13. Rowan led the 2024 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball after the opening round with partner Kenny Cook.

Peter Samborsky II finished in solo third place at 1-under and was the only other amateur to advance to final qualifying. Full Field Results>

Goose Creek Golf Club, Jurupa Valley, Calif.

Tyler Crawford and Pete Roberts finished as the low amateurs at T3 and 1-under. Crawford recorded three birdies and two bogeys, while Roberts had a more volatile round with six birdies and five bogeys. Seven of the 18 players that advanced to final qualifying were amateurs. Full Field Results>

The top two finishers at this site where amateurs, with Scott Shingler winning medalist honors at 2-under and Jeff Mallette finished in solo second place at 1-under. James Wingerter was the other amateur who advanced to final qualifying. Full Field Results>

Tuesday, April 22

Horizon Golf Club, Horizon City, Tex.

Three amateurs were among the seven players that moved onto the final qualifying from this site, including Mallory Miller, who shot 4-under 66 to earn medalist honors. Miller shot a 4-under 31 on the front nine with birdies on holes No. 1, 3, 6, and 7.

Thursday, April 17

Mission Hills Country Club, Mission Hills, Kan.

Only one player finished at even par or better at Mission Hills, with amateur Brian Haskell shooting an even par round and winning medalist honors by three shots over the field. Peter Vitali, David Rismiller, David Strickland, Bryan Norton, Tim Holmes, Kit Grove, Mark Chambers and Ben Kimminau all qualified for final qualifying as amateurs. Full Field Results>

Wynlakes Golf and Country Club, Montgomery, Tex.

Amateur Chris Devlin, who won the 2024 Trans-Miss Mid-Amateur, was one of three golfers to shoot 3-under 69 and earn co-medalist honors.

Monday, April 14

Franklin Bridge Golf Club, Franklin, Tenn.

Six amateurs earned spots at the final qualifying at Franklin Bridge, where 12 spots were available. Travis Womble shot a 2-under 68 to earn low amateur honors, while Shane Childress, Ryan McCann, Jay Potter, Benjamin Whitlock, and Gary Slayden were the other amateurs who made it through. Meadowbrook Farms Golf Club, Katy, Tex.

One of the biggest fields in the local qualifying with 17 spots available, with seven amateurs qualifying, including Craig Hurlbert, the 2020 AGC Senior Player of the Year. Jess Bonneau, Shane Heise, Andy Hydorn, Stephen Crossland, William Bonner and robby McWilliams were the amateurs along with Hurlbert who qualified at Meadowbrook Farms. Full Field Results>

Richmond Country Club, Richmond, Calif.

Amateurs dominated the field at Richmond Country Club, with Jerry Ledzinski shooting a 4-under 68 to win medalist honors by two shots. He went nuclear on the back nine, recording six birdies, including birdies on holes No. 14, 15, 17 and 18 to get to 4-under. Amateur William Ayres finished in solo second place at 2-under and was the only other player to finish under par.

Arrowhead Golf Club, Molalla, Ore.

Amateur Daniel Dyquisto of Portland, Ore., shot 73 to earn medalist honors and advanced to Final Qualifying. Full Field Results>

The Village Course at Waikoloa, Waikoloa, Hawaii

Amateur Channing Tam shot an even-par 72 to earn the fourth and final qualifying spot in Hawaii, overcoming a double bogey on No. 11. Full Field Results>
