The Spartans won the invitational for the second time in five years, taking down NC State by five shots
The Michigan State women’s golf team, the Spartans, shot 4-under 860 with rounds of 284-282-290, securing the team championship at the Briar’s Creek Invitational held at the Golf Club at Briar’s Creek in Johns Island, S.C.
This marks the second team title for the Spartans at the Briar's Creek Invitational, having previously won the event in 2019. Meanwhile, NC State shot rounds of 291-293-281, finishing as the runner-up at 1-over 865.
In the individual competition, there was a four-way tie at the top of the leaderboard.
Lauren Olivares, a junior at North Carolina State, finished 5-under 211, earning her a share of the medalist honors with Michigan State juniors Brooke Biermann and Katie Lu, as well as Illinois senior Isabel Sy. Leon carded rounds of 74-69-68, Biermann posted scores of 68-70-73, Sy recorded 67-70-74, and Lu finished with rounds of 69-67-75.
Olivares is currently ranked No. 75 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com Women's Rankings and recently finished in solo seventh place at the South America Women's Amateur. Sy is ranked No. 64 and is coming off a win at the Chevron Collegiate.
It also represents the second occasion on which Spartans have secured medalist honors, as Lu and Biermann tied for first place, joining former Spartan Allyson Geer-Park, who claimed victory in 2019 with a tournament record of 13-under par 203.
On the stats front, Michigan State ranked second on par 4s with a scoring average of 4.12 and on par 5s with 4.80. The team also recorded the second-highest number of birdies at 44. Meanwhile, NC State led the field with 45 birdies in the tournament. Additionally, Lu and Olivares carded the most number of birdies at 13.
