ROLAND, Ark. (July 31, 2013) -- Two-time Walker Cup selection Patrick Rodgers shot a second-round 68 and jumped into a tie for the second-round lead at the 2013 Western Amateur.
At The Alotian Club, Rodgers paired his first-round 67 with a Wednesday 68. That was good enough to put him atop the leaderboard with Seth Reeves of Georgia Tech and Jordan Niebrugge, perhaps the hottest golfer in the tournament.
Niebrugge, of course, is fresh off wins at the U.S. Public Links and Wisconsin Amateur. He shot 66-69 over the first two rounds to reach 9-under.
Reeves, who was one of three players to share the lead after Round 1, shot 70 on Wednesday.
Cal senior and Walker Cup target Michael Weaver is tied for fourth after rounds of 68-69. He's joined by Michael Miller, Robby Shelton, David Snyder and Sean Dale. Miller and Dale were outside contenders for one of the remaining three non-mid amateur Walker Cup slots but a win at the Western Amateur could certainly shake up the current environment.
The Western Amateur features 56 of the world's top 100 players and is annually one of the season's best events.
The international event is a true test. Tuesday's first round began 72 holes of stroke play, which is followed by a 16-player match-play event.
