CHAPEL HILL, NC (October 15, 2016) -- First round leader Wake Forest has been joined atop the Tar Heel Invite leaderboard by Alabama. Both teams are 7-under after 36-holes at UNC's Finley Golf Course and leading third place Ohio State by one shot.
Wake Forest continues to be led by medalist leader Jennifer Kupcho. One day after shooting a 5-under 67 the sophomore fired a 4-under 68 to reach 9-under. An All-ACC performer last year, Kupcho birdied three holes on the front to reach 8-under and turn with a bogey-free 3-under 33. Heading home Kupcho was able to move to 10-under with an eagle on the par-5 13th but two bogeys and just one more birdie would follow.
The Demon Deacons are also being helped by freshman Sierra Sims (E; T13), sophomore Antonia Eberhard (+2; T23) and junior Erica Herr (+3; T29).
Alabama is being paced by sophomore Lauren Stephenson who is 6-under and in second place of the individual standings. Stephenson has posted rounds of 68-70 thus far. The transfer from Clemson moved into solo second place with a five birdie, three bogey round.
Also playing well for Alabama is the duo of sophomore Cheyenne Knight and freshman Kristen Gillman at 3-under and tied for fifth.
Behind Kupcho and Stephenson in the medalist chase are Arkansas' Alana Uriell and Ohio State's Nikolette Schroeder tied for third at 4-under. Six other players are tied for fifth at 3-under.
The top-five of the team standings is filled out by Arkansas (-3) in fourth and North Carolina State (+1) in fifth.
ROUND ONE RECAP
Wake Forest is one of four teams under-par and they have taken the first round lead at the Tar Heel Invite being played at UNC's Finley Golf Course. The Demon Deacons currently sit at 6-under, one shot in front of second place Ohio State.
Leading the way for Wake Forest is individual leader Jennifer Kupcho. The sophomore, an Honorable Mention All-American last year, posted a 5-under 67 to take the lead by one-stroke. Coming off a fifth place finish in last years Tar Heel Invite, Kupcho birdied holes 3, 4 and 6 to reach the 3-under tally that she turned with. Kupcho began her backside with another birdie on the 10th before dropping her only stroke of the day on the 12th. Two birdies on the way in saw Kupcho reach 5-under.
Wake Forest also received under-par play from sophomore Antonia Eberhard. The German native fired a 2-under 70 and she is tied for seventh. Freshman Sierra Sims shot an even-par 70 to tie for 17th.
Kupcho currently holds a slim lead in the medalist chase with Alabama's Lauren Stephenson and Ohio State's Nikolette Schroeder sitting one shot back at 4-under in a tie for second. In addition to Kupcho, 15 other players were in red figures on day one and they are all within four shots of the lead.
Rounding out the top-five in the team standings are Alabama (-3) in third, Arkansas (-2) in fourth and North Carolina State (E) in fifth.
