Zander Lombard leads South African Northern Amateur

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (March 12, 2012) -- All six members of the Scottish Golfing Union National Men’s Squad made the 36-hole cut at the Northern Amateur Open in South Africa to keep alive hopes of emulating the achievement of champion David Law 12 months ago. Aberdour’s Scott Crichton, one of the success stories of the winter training programme so far, led the Scots contingent after the second round of stroke play at Johannesburg’s Randpark, adding a 69 to his opening 68 for a brilliant seven-under-par total. Crichton sits in a share of second place, just a shot behind Zander Lombard. Leven Golfing Society’s Brian Soutar, the South African Amateur champion, also returned to top form with a second-round 68 for a three-under-par total, the same mark as Paul Shields (Kirkhill) in a tie for eighth spot. James White of Lundin, meanwhile, is a shot further back after a 74, with Daniel Kay (Dunbar) at one-over-par in a share of 26th place. Fraser McKenna (Balmore) completed the Scottish qualifiers at two-over in a tie for 36th. The top 60 and ties after 36 holes have qualified for the next two rounds of stroke play, before the top 32 go to match play for the title. Hazlehead's Law won the tournament at Randpark last year, before going on to enjoy a fine year that included a second Scottish Amateur title in three years.
