Zachary Smith grabs first-round lead at Tennessee Amateur

High-schooler Zachary Smith eagled his final hole of the day to take a one-shot lead into Wednesday's second round

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Zachary Smith of Bartlett holds a one-stroke lead heading into the second round of the 100th Annual Tennessee State Amateur Championship hosted by Holston Hills Country Club of Knoxville. Smith got off on the right foot with a birdie at the par-4 first. An impressive front side 4-under par 31 was followed by a 1-under par 34 on the back nine. The round was capped off with a tremendous eagle at the par-5 eighteenth for a 5-under par 65 total. Wes Gosselin of Knoxville sits one shot back at 4-under par 66. 2014 State Amateur Champion Tim Jackson of Germantown sits two shots back tied for third with Lake Johnson of Chattanooga. Round two of this 72-hole event begins Wednesday morning. Holston Hills Country Club of Knoxville, which is draped in tradition, is hosting the event for the ninth time in its storied career. Holston Hills, a Donald Ross design, has hosted numerous Southern Amateurs, NCAA Championships, and played host to the 2004 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.
