Wolff trailed teammate Zach Bouchou after the opening round when Bauchou threw out a 9-under 63 at Waikoloa Kings’ Course. After opening with 69, Wolff added 64-65. At 18 under, Wolff had a three-shot cushion on runner-up Edwin Yi of Oregon.
In 13 competitive stroke-play rounds this season, Wolff has broken 70 in 10 of them. His four titles are also the most ever won by an Oklahoma State sophomore.
The Cowboys’ win marked the first time a team has won consecutive titles at the event since Georgia Tech won the 1999 and 2000 events. The Cowboys have also now won the Amer Ari eight times and have claimed the medalist six times.
As for Wolff, this win is only likely to increase the Wolff mania that took off last week when he made his PGA Tour debut at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and created a media storm with his opening 67. It was Wolff who put the clinching point on the board for Oklahoma State at last spring’s national championship.
While Wolff and the Cowboys went insanely deep under par, scoring was low across the board. Texas reached 35 under to finish third, while USC and Oregon tied for fourth at 30 under. Eleven of the 18 teams in the field were under par, and 47 individuals had a 54-hole total under par.
USC’s Justin Suh and Texas’ Cole Hammer tied for fourth at 13-under 203. Both players had a second-round 64 to vault up the leaderboard and into contention for the individual title.
Let’s talk about @matthew_wolff5’s season.
