JACKSON, Miss. — As a crowd gathered around the 18th green in typical Mississippi summer heat, the Mississippi Golf Association prepared for the Centennial Amateur awards presentation.
Three deserving amateurs completed their final hole while spectators congratulated each competitor. The final pairing of Wilson Furr, Braden Thornberry, and Hayden Buckley grinded throughout Sunday's round as they attempted to conquer the difficult greens of the Country Club of Jackson.
Noah Goldman of Starkville carded the low round of the day 68, but it was not quite enough to reach the three-round leader, Wilson Furr. Runners-up, Goldman, Buckley, Brescher, and Thornberry each finished at six-under par.
The centennial amateur was one for the history books, as Furr was the youngest recorded champion at 16-years old. Wilson Furr carried home the B.F. Spec Wilson Memorial trophy as well as the Charles Green Team Trophy with fellow Country Club of Jackson member, Charlie Miller.
Furr has committed to attend the University of Alabama once he graduates high school in 2017.
