Wang shoots 69 to lead PNGA Women's Amateur Qualifying

RENTON, Washington (July 17, 2017) — The best female amateur players in the Pacific-Northwest area began play Monday morning at the PNGA Women’s Amateur Championship. Stanford sophomore Ziyi Wang finds herself alone, as the only player in red number’s after the opening round at Fairwood G&CC. Wang began her day with a birdie on the 366-yard 1st hole, immediately giving the stroke back with a bogey on the par-4 2nd hole. It would be smooth sailing from there for the Chinese national, who would play 3 through 18 bogey free, making birdies on the 6th and 14th on her way to posting a 2-under-par 69. Wang's closest chasers are Colorado State’s Ellen Secor and incoming Arizona State Junior and 2017 Oregon Women’s Amater Champion, Gigi Stoll, who finished at 2 and 3-over-par, respectively. MID-AMATEUR Christina Proteau has a comfortable 4-stroke advantage in the Mid-Amateur division after Monday’s opening round. Proteau, who famously proceeded to the semifinal round in the 2014 U.S. Mid-Amateur, despite being 6-months pregnant with her first-born child, is looking to make headlines again this week with a win at Fairwood G&CC Proteau’s 3-over-par round would contain more substance than flash, scratching together a total of fifteen pars and three bogeys on her way to a round of 74. In a tie for second place with Proteau are 67-year-old Canadian, Alison Murdoch and golf fitness specialist Shawn Farmer-Sese. Murdoch can be remembered for winning the Irish Senior Amateur Championship a total of four times, including one Senior British Amateur title in 2007. Last year’s PNGA Mid-Am champion, Amanda Jacobs is currently tied for fourth place with Canadian native, Sandra Turbide.
