Wake Forest tops Landfall Tradition as 1st round suspended

WILMINGTON, N.C. (Oct. 26, 2018) – Despite an early shotgun, the field at the Landfall Traditional couldn’t outrun the weather on the North Carolina coast. Most teams played between 13 and 16 holes Friday in the opening round at the CC of Landfall before play was called for the day. Wake Forest has a slim lead on ACC foe Duke.

The Demon Deacons are playing without their star Jennifer Kupcho as she competes in the LPGA Q-Series this week. Kupcho earned her spot in that field after finishing her junior season as one of Golfweek’s top-5 ranked collegians.

In Kupcho’s absence, the Wake Forest underclassmen rallied. Sophomore Emilia Migliaccio, last year’s ACC Freshman of the Year, and Letizia Bagnoli, a freshman from Italy, are even after 13 and 15 holes, respectively. As a team, Wake Forest is 4 over.

"The young ladies showed a lot of determination in the weather," said head coach Kim Lewellen. "It was a long, hard day with stopping and starting several times. I'm very proud of their perseverance. We look forward to finishing our round tomorrow and having good weather for the last two rounds."

Duke, coming off its first fall victory last week at the Tar Heel Invitational, is 7 over and close behind. Senior Virginia Elena Carta is even par through 16 holes and freshman Gina Kim is 1 over.

Arkansas is tied for third with Penn State at 10 over. Arkansas is missing Maria Fassi, who is also competing in the Q-Series.

Maryland’s Virunpat Olankitkunchai leads individually after getting to 3 under through 13 holes.
