USGA Women's Publinx- Two share medalist honors

A pair of teenagers, Angela Park of Torrance, Calif., and Mari Chun of Pearl City, Hawaii, registered 6-under-par totals of 136 to pace qualifying

Kansas City, Mo. (July 12, 2005) -– A pair of teenagers, Angela Park of Torrance, Calif., and Mari Chun of Pearl City, Hawaii, registered 6-under-par totals of 136 to share medalist honors Tuesday after the second day of stroke play at the 2005 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship at Swope Memorial Golf Course. Park, a 16-year-old Brazilian-born high schooler from Torrance, Calif., who speaks three languages, followed her first-day score of 66 with a 1-under 70, that included three birdies and two bogeys. Chun, 17, logged a 2-under-69 and just missed a 10-foot birdie putt on her 18th which would have given her the scoring medal outright. The 136 is the second-lowest medalist score in WAPL history, just one stroke off the mark of 135 set by Brittany Lang in 2004. Lang was co-runner-up at the 2005 U.S. Women’s Open as an amateur. "That’s huge," said the soft-spoken Park, of medalist honors. "I do have a lot of confidence in my game now and I look forward to doing well in match play. I struggled with my drives. I missed six fairways but I got up and down when I needed to and I got birdies when I needed to." Park, whose Korean parents met in Brazil where her mother runs an embroidery factory, was a semifinalist at the 2004 WAPL, losing to 2003 champion Michelle Wie, 2 and 1. Chun, who will attend Stanford on a golf scholarship this fall, was a co-medalist at the 2004 Girls’ Junior. She has played in three USGA championships and been co-medalist twice. "It feels great," Chun said of her medal-winning accomplishment. "It was a surprise because before I even played I was told (mistakenly) that Angela Park had shot 67. So, I thought she was 9-under. I said ‘OK, I’ll just do as best as I can.’ I thought I’d be third or fourth but I didn’t think I’d be co-medalist." Marina Choi of Los Angeles, Calif., stood three strokes behind Park and Chun at 139 with Jackie Beers of Bonaire, Ga., and Eun Jung Lee of Korea, at 141. Defending champion Ya-Ni Tseng shot another 76 for a 36-hole score of 152, which snuck her into the 64-player match play field as the cut, with no playoff needed, came at 11-over-par 153. The best round of the day was a 3-under 68 from Amanda Mathis of Picayune, Miss. Just eight sub-par scores were returned on the second day compared to 10 on the first. Six rounds of match play begin Wednesday and conclude with the 36-hole championship final on Saturday. The Women’s Amateur Public Links Team Championship was won by the Conyers, Ga. team of Carmen Bandea of Duluth Ga., Beers and Kyu Ri Ban of Korea, with a 2-over-par total of 286. The two better scores of three were counted each day. The U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links is one of 10 national championships for amateurs conducted annually by the USGA. The Association also conducts the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and the U.S. Senior Open.
