PINEHURST, N.C. (June 13, 2014) -- University of Alabama star Cory Whitsett fired a 1-under 69 on Friday but it wasn't enough to sneak him under the cut line at the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

Whitsett missed the 5-over 145 cut by just a shot, leaving reigning U.S. Amateur champion Matthew Fitzpatrick as the only amateur golfer to make the cut at the U.S. Open.

Fitzpatrick shot 1-over 71 on Thursday and shot 3- over 73 on Friday to finish the first two days of the event at 144 and two shots under the cut line heading into the weekend.

Fitzpatrick, of course, also won low amateurs at the British Open last year before being named to the Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cup team. After just one semester at Northwestern University, Fitzpatrick left the school to focus on his game full-time. He intends to turn professional after this weekend's play and recently took a Top 25 at the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town on Hilton Head Island.

Vanderbilt's Hunter Stewart and Illinois star Brian Campbell also finished at 146 and just outside of the 36-hole cut.

Stanford's Cameron Wilson, who won the NCAA Championship earlier this month, shot an even par 70 in Round 2 but it wasn't enough to get him under the cut line after a tough opening-round 78.
