U.S. Open: Amateur Emiliano Grillo plays waiting game as No. 1 alternate

Emiliano Grillo, 19, is the first alternate at the U.S. Open and opted out of an amateur event for the slim chance of playing

BETHESDA, Mary. (June 15, 2011) -- Emiliano Grillo failed to qualify for the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional when he three-putted in a playoff at a sectional qualifier in Tennessee, but he still may get his chance to play in his first major championship. And so it goes for the first alternate at the U.S. Open. According to the Associated Press, Grillo opted out of an amateur event in upstate New York in case he's called upon Thursday. USGA rules indicate that the first alternate is not allowed to play a practice round at the event's course. So, if he was to gain a slot, Grillo would be seeing Congressional for the first time.
