ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (July 23, 2011) - The second round of the New Mexico- West Texas Amateur Championship turned into a traffic jam on Saturday afternoon as the field came together and found 14 players within five shots of the lead by the end of the day. Day two saw perfect conditions once again and allowed the field to condense, as several players went low while the leaders came back to the field a bit. While the opening round saw only four players finish under par, a dozen such rounds were posted on Saturday.
At the top of the leaderboard
at two-under par for the tournament is 2011
Albuquerque City Champion Alex Estrada,
Belen, N.M., and Zach Fullerton and Patrick
Beyhan, both of Albuquerque, N.M. The
trio will play together in the final group at UNM
Championship GC. Following closely
behind is a quartet at one-under par, made up
of first round leader Jake Spencer, Anthony,
N.M., defending champion Daniel Medina, El
Paso, Texas, Greg Condon of Monte Vista,
Colo., who entered the upper echelon of the
event by virtue of his tournament-low round of
67 and Albuquerque's James Lee.
Sunday's final round will be made up of 47
players, the low two-thirds of the field that
survived the cut and will tee off at 7:00am.
