Trent Phillips moves to top Palmetto Amateur leaderboard

Four players will begin the final round within four-strokes of the lead held by Trent Phillips

AIKEN, SC (July 22, 2016) -- For the third consecutive day the Palmetto Amateur lead has changed hands; first it was Ben Dietrich and Doc Redman sharing the lead, then it was Jake McBride and now it is Trent Phillips. On Friday Phillips shot a 3-under 67 to move to 8-under and take a two-stroke lead. Phillips, a junior golfer from Inman, SC started his day by birdieing three holes on the opening nine to turn in 3-under 31. The closing nine was a bit rocky at times but the 2016 South Carolina Junior winner was able to salvage an even-par 36 with a final hole birdie. Phillips' homeward nine was comprised of three birdies and three bogeys. Future Clemson golfer Doc Redman remained at 6-under after a third round even-par 72. Redman shot a 3-over 37 on the frontside with two bogeys, a double-bogey and just one birdie. The outward struggle dropped Redman back to 3-under but he was able to rebound with three consecutive birdies from holes 13-15 and return to 6-under. James Clark, a junior at Georgia Tech, and 36-hole leader Jake McBride of NC State are tied for third at 5-under. McBride couldn't follow up his second round 9-under 61 as he shot a 5-over 75 with six bogeys and only one birdie. First round co-leader Ben Dietrich (South Carolina) is 4-under and in fifth place.
