Top-ranked Texas shares Donnis Thompson title with SMU

The two teams finished 54 holes in Hawaii knotted atop the field. That makes to consecutive wins for Texas

When Texas won the Allstate Sugar Bowl last month, they became the top-ranked team in the nation, according to the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings. And as the top-ranked team, the Longhorns shared the title at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational on Tuesday in Hawaii.

Both Texas and SMU finished 54 holes at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course with 23-over totals. SMU made up some ground in Round 3, turning in a 6-over 294 that was the best round of the day.

The Longhorns have won three times total this season. This also marks the first time the Longhorns have won back-to-back tournaments in the same season since 1992-93.

Hailee Cooper led the team with a sixth-place finish at 6 over. Interestingly, Texas’ next 3 scorers all tied for 11th. SMU’s top player, senior Brigitte Dunne, tied for second after closing with 2-under 70, the round of the day. Dunne was 3 over for the week, which left her three shots behind medalist Courtney Dow of Texas A&M.

"It was nice to get out of here with a tie for first,” Texas head coach Ryan Murphy said. “We had a sluggish start and a sluggish finish but hung on just enough. It's always nice to win, but we'll need to clean up certain areas if we want to play to our potential. Also, the coolest thing about our third win this season is that we've done it with three different lineups. It's nice to be in that position."

As for SMU, a shared title in Hawaii amounts to the first victory of the season. The Mustangs are ranked No. 64 by Golfweek.
