Tony Romo’s summer amateur schedule continues to take shape. The former Cowboys quarterback opened with 2-under 70 in his Dogwood Invitational debut, which left him six shots off the lead (but tied for 24th) at Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga.
As that was happening, another top amateur tournament announced that Romo will be in this year’s field. He’ll appear at the Northeast Amateur at Wannamoisett Golf Club in Rumford, R.I., at the end of the month.
Romo competes frequently as an amateur, teeing it up everywhere from Wisconsin state amateur events to the prestigious Western Amateur (he missed the 36-hole cut there each of the past two years).
Last fall, Romo entered Web.com Qualifying School and advanced to the first stage by finishing in the top 30 in a pre-qualifier. He has played a handful of PGA Tour events on sponsor exemptions, most recently missing the cut at the AT&T Byron Nelson.
Earlier this spring, Romo tried U.S. Open local qualifying, but failed to advance to sectionals. For now, amateur golf seems a fine focus.
“I just enjoy the competition of being on the course,” Romo told AmateurGolf.com when asked why he continues to compete at a high level. “I love the fact that I can try to produce something and the fact that people don’t think I can do it.”
