Texas squeaks by Virginia to win U.S. Collegiate

(Oct. 19, 2014) — No. 16 Texas Men's Golf won the U.S. Collegiate Championship with an 11-under-par 277 team score in Sunday's final round at the Golf Club of Georgia. The Longhorns (278-288-277=843, -21) outdueled No. 13 Virginia (272-295-277=844, -20) down the stretch, eventually defeating the Cavaliers by one stroke. The win marks the first tournament victory since the Longhorns victory in the 2014 Big-12 Championship last spring. Texas was paced by a pair of 5-under-par 67s from sophomore Gavin Hall and freshman Scottie Scheffler. Hall (67-75-67=209, -7) finished the tournament in a tie for third, improving 11 spots on the leaderboard in the final round. The Pittsford, N.Y. native has now placed in the top 10 in all three tournaments this spring. Scheffler (68-75-67=210, -6) moved 13 spots on the leaderboard with his final round. His 67 and tie for sixth place are career bests. Senior Kramer Hickok (70-68-75=213, -3) finished with a share of 13th in his first tournament of the fall, while sophomore Beau Hossler (73-70-72=215, -1) ended in a tie for 19th. Redshirt senior Brax McCarthy (74-77-71=222, +6) carded a 1-under-par 71 in the final round. Virginia claimed the top two spots on the player leaderboard. Derek Bard (66-71-64=201, -15) took individual medalist honors.
