DALLAS, Texas (Feb 25, 2012) -- A cold and
breezy
morning welcomed the field for the first round
of the
Texas Golf Association’s North Four-Ball
Championship
which is being held at The Honors Golf Club of
Dallas,
located in Carrollton. The par-72, D.A.
Weibring
designed course, gave the players a beautiful
setting
for the first Regional Championship of the year.
In all,
twenty teams found themselves under par
after
completion of round one, proving that early
year rust
was not going to be a factor.
The morning frost quickly disappeared as
several
teams caught fire with stellar opening rounds.
Allen’s
Mike Calef and Kevin Somers wasted no time
carding
birdies on three of their first five holes. Adding
another birdie on their final hole of the front
nine
allowed the team to make the turn at four
under par.
After a par on the par-4 first (their 10th),
Calef and
Somers steamrolled through the front carding
three
straight birdies on holes two through four and
adding
two more birdies on six and seven giving them
an
opening round 63 (-9). Seven of the team’s
nine
birdies were carded by Mr. Calef.
The team of Patrick Cawthorne and Lewis
Stephenson,
both from Mansfield, find themselves just two
back
heading into Sunday’s final round. After turning
the
front at three under par the team finished with
a flurry
making birdies on three of their last four holes
securing a first round total of seven under par,
65.
Two teams sit just two back of the leaders.
The teams
of Peyton Cook and Scott Maurer and Michael
Guerrette and Jay Cspikes look to make a final
round
move as both teams fired opening rounds of
66.
Sunday’s final round is setting up for a
showdown with
a crowded leaderboard vying for the first
Regional
Championship of the Texas Golf Association’s
2012
season.
