Texas jumps out to 5-shot lead at The Prestige

A year ago at PGA West, the talk of the range (and course) at PGA West was Matthew Wolff. With his hot streak, and unique swing, it wasn't uncommon for a small crowd of club members and onlookers to gather around him while he was going through his range warm-up. Plus, he was heading into the event looking for an amazing fifth-straight individual collegiate title. His Oklahoma State Cowboys were ranked No. 1, and while LSU took the team title and Wolff's streak was broken, a member of his team (2018 U.S. Am champ Viktor Hovland) did shoot 8-under to win the individual title. With both players securing PGA Tour cards, and Oklahoma State not in the current top-25, it's apparent that things change quickly in college golf. Now it's Oklahoma (The Sooners that is) at the top of the rankings. Texas, at No. 11 in the last coaches poll, leads the Prestige after 36 holes at 14-under. Today they overtook first round leaders Pepperdine off of consistent performances from the entire team; their four counting scores were all in the 60s. Travis Vick fired 68, while the Coody brothers (Pierceson and Parker) as well as Spencer Soosman all shot 69. (Soosman, incidentally, just missed qualifying for the Genesis Invitational at Riviera, shooting even par at Riviera in the Genesis Collegiate Showcase to finish T2.) Leading the individual competition is Leo Oyo of San Diego State -- today he fired his second-straight 68 to sit at 6-under, that's two shots in front of a large group of seven players tied at 4-under. The tournament concludes tomorrow.
